The Opposition Bharatiya Janata while accusing the Centre of watering down the case against Education Minister Babush Monserrate, demanded a CBI probe into his finances. The demand was made by Aarti Mehra, the BJP’s in charge of Goa desk.
Pointing out that Monserrate himself has admitted to carrying huge sums of money abroad earlier, she demanded to know why he took so much of money outside the country.
She also accused the Customs of adopting double standards under political pressure and pointed out that Customs officials were more than willing to give minute details of a similar case with regards to Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan while being very secretive about Babush affair and alleged that Customs officials were pressurized by the office of the Finance Minister.
Meanwhile, Customs officials have ruled out the immediate arrest of Babush Monserrate on grounds that he has furnished a bond assuring his presence whenever required by the officials for further investigations.
Monserrate who was grilled by Customs officials for over 18 hours on last Saturday after he was found carrying excess currency with him while scheduled to travel to Dubai was further grilled for over six hours on Friday by Customs officials in Mumbai.
Even though the Customs have refused the return his passport that was impounded when he was detained first, Monserrate claimed that his presence was no longer required and hence forth he would be represented by his lawyer before the officials.
