The BJPs Navelim mandal has demanded the immediate arrest of Aquem-Baixo village panchayat member Ashok Shirodkar for driving his housemaid Farmida Shaikh to commit suicide.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, mandal president Shaikh Jina questioned the delay by the Margao police in taking Shirodkar into custody. He pointed out that two days had passed since an offence was booked against Shirodkar under Section 306 of IPC (abetment to suicide).
Expressing apprehensions that political pressure was being brought to bear in the case given that the accused is allegedly a known supporter of PWD minister Churchill Alemao, the BJP warned of launching a stir if the police fail to act soon.
It may be recalled that 20-year-old Shaikh committed suicide last week after Shirodkar lodged a complaint with the Margao police accusing her of theft of 2.5 lakh worth gold ornaments from his house. Allegedly agonized by subsequent police questioning in the matter, Shaikh ended her life by hanging herself to the rafter of her house when no one was around.
Following a complaint by Shaikh’s father, the police registered a case against Shirodkar. A complaint has also been lodged with the Goa state commission for women in this regard, it is learnt.
