The Bharatiya Janata Party has come down heavily upon the government for agreeing to receive the Portuguese vessel Sagres currently journeying to the Far East to commemorate 500 years of discovery of this region by the European nations.
The ship is expected to dock at Mormugao port on Friday and will remain anchored at the Port till 16th November.
Pointing out that the Portuguese enslaved Goa for nearly 500 years after they arrived as traders, BJP State President Laxmikant Parsekar said receiving the ship by the State Chief Minister would tantamount to approving the slavery which would be an insult to the various freedom fighters that fought to throw off the Portuguese from the Goan soil.
“By participating in an event meant to glorify the act of colonizing, the chief minister is belittling the sacrifices of the sons and daughters of the soil,” said Parsekar.
He opined that the chief minister would lose all moral right to felicitate freedom fighters or participate in the Liberation celebrations if he participates in the function meant to commemorate the colonizing of Goa.
