Goa Police on Friday morning named Deputy Superintendent of Police Bossuet D’Silva as the officer to investigate the custodial death of Non Resident Goan Cipriano Fernandes.
It may be recalled that Cipriano was picked up by police on 7th January after his girl friend complained to the police of being threatened by him with a knife. According to eyewitnesses, the police started beating Cipriano even as he was being pushed into the police vehicle.
Cipriano was admitted to Goa Medical College on 8th January evening and died early the next morning. The post mortem report indicates that there were six injuries on Cipriano’s body including his head.
Cipriano’s family backed by Utt Goenkara had refused to take possession of the body till justice was meted to them and the official responsible for the death was booked. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat had ordered an inquiry in the matter following which the SIT has been constituted.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (North) Arvind Gawas clarified that the SIT would probe only into police procedures and whether there were any lapses in it and also if there was any brutality on the part of the police.
