In a freak accident a boulder crashed into the Mangalore-Mumbai Matsyagandha Express train on Monday evening injuring around 17 passengers who were rushed to the Karwar Hospital.
The accident occurred at around 7 pm between Harwad and Karwar when the huge boulder rolled down to hit three bogies of the train. The train chugged into the Karwar railway station from where the injured persons were taken to the hospital.
Sources informed that at least three of the passengers were critically injured and some of them are likely to be shifted either to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim, Goa or Manipal Hospital at Udipi, Karnataka.
Although there were unconfirmed reports of one of the passengers succumbing to the injuries, KRC officials were tightlipped about it.
KRC has installed advanced warning system that alerts of any landslide along the route that passes through mountainous terrain and has been experiencing landslides frequently during the monsoons.
However, in the instance case there was no landslide as only one boulder rolled down. The track has not been affected and after an initial delay, rail traffic was back to normal.
