The judging for both will be held on the 15th and 22nd January, 2012 and garden experts will visit the houses and apartments of the competitors to judge the entries.
This year, the added feature is the ‘Kitchen Garden’ (fruit and vegetable plants on the ground or in pots/planters, etc) will also be judged separately from the ornamental gardens for separate prizes. Those having only kitchen gardens can also compete for this category. Kitchen gardens that follow jaivik or organic agriculture practices, without use of insecticides and synthetic fertilizers will be given preference.
Cash prizes of Rs.10,000, Rs.6,000 and Rs. 4000 for the top three kitchen gardens are sponsored by ‘Green Essentials’, the organic manures, seed and seedling shop at Taleigao.
Two main categories for the traditional competition are:
1.Totally amateur and self-maintained garden of the competitor; and
2.Gardens professionally assisted for design and/or maintenance.
Organisers expect the competitor to make an honest declaration. Organizers have also stated that the prize will be withdrawn if external assistance (other than labour for digging, weeding, etc) is proved in case of amateur garden entry.
The prizes are Rs. 5,000, Rs.3, 000 and Rs.2, 000. The competitors are also eligible to enter and win the prize money for the Kitchen garden.
Terrace and balcony gardens will be judged separately for both the competitions and prizes will be awarded as per the decision of the judges.
