Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, on Thursday announced several schemes for the girl child during the budget 2011-12, with a provision of Rs 56 crore made for these schemes.
The chief minister said that the all time low sex ratio of 1000:961 was a major cause of worry for the state government and it needed a multi-pronged corrective strategy to resolve the crisis early.
Announcing the schemes, he informed that the state government will provide the mother with a financial assistance of Rs 5,000 immediately when a girl child is delivered provided it is not her third child.
He further informed that under the ‘chief minister girl child security scheme’ once a girl child is born a fixed deposit of Rs 25,000 will be automatically opened in her name which could be withdrawn after the girl completes 18 years of her age.
Under this new scheme, he said, the girl child will be provided with free school uniforms, text books and educational aid as further incentives.
Financial assistance under the Kanyadaan scheme will be increased to Rs 25,000 from Rs 15,000.
