Panaji, Apr 16 (GCCurrentAffairs) Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), which is contesting only one seat in the by-elections to be held along with Lok Sabha elections in the state on April 23, 2019, has adopted interesting strategy as far as supporting candidates is concerned.
While MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar is contesting from Shiroda assembly constituency, the party has extended support to Congress candidate Sudhir Kandolkar in Mapusa. In Mandrem constituency, the party has announced to support Jit Arolkar, who is an independent candidate.
When asked reason behind the strategy, Mr Dhavalikar, who is former MLA from Priol and was minister in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government from 2012-17, said the move was political one and aimed at defeating BJP candidates.
Till recently MGP was an alliance partner of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its two MLAs — Manohar Ajgaonkar and Sudin Dhavalikar– were ministers in Manohar Parrikar led government. When after demise of Parrikar, Pramod Sawant was appointed Chief Minister, Sudin Dhavalikar was appointed Deputy Chief Minister. But within seven days of his appointment, two MLAs of MGP– Deepak Pauskar and Manohar Ajgaonkar– left party with their supporters and joined BJP. While Sudin Dhavalikar was dropped from the cabinet, Deepak Pawaskar was rewarded with ministry and Mr Ajgaonkar promoted as Deputy Chief Minister.
MGP has also announced its support to Congress candidates in both North Goa and South Goa constituencies in the Lok Sabha polls.
