The One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for payment of outstanding dues has been extended upvto March 2011, informed Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at a press conference after the State Cabinet meeting on Monday. He informed that the maximum limit of outstanding arrears has also has been increased from 50,000 to 1 lakh. “The cabinet decided to extend the date because many consumers have been approaching the electricity department to settle their bills under the OTS scheme,” he said informing that the government has received a very good response and has been successful in recovering 41 lakh from 645 consumers.
Two years ago the OTS scheme was approved by the Government for defaulting consumers of electricity charges who had accumulated arrears of 20,000, which limit was subsequently increased to 50,000 and has now been increased to one lakh.
Incidentally, majority of the defaulters are the power guzzling industrial units primarily comprising of steel rolling mills that have been a bone of contention in Goa given the fact that most of the employees here are migrants.
