Geologist Refuses To Sign Police Complaint

A geologist of the Mines Department has refused to sign the police complaint against illegal mining at Sanvordem which was revealed during an inspection held on 15th June.

Following complaints from locals of illegal mining the department carried out an inspection at Dukorni in Sanvordem and discovered that three pits were dug in an area of around 20,000 square metres.

While ore was extracted from two pits, in the third banana saplings were planted probably to give the impression that the pits were dug for horticulture purpose.

However, the officials found five heaps of ore totaling around 500 tonnes and having a grade between 40 to 50 per cent iron content.

Surprisingly, after the inspection when the report was prepared mentioning all the above mentioned facts, Gil Peres D’Costa, the geologist attached to Mines and Geology Department’s Quepem branch refused to sign the report as well as the complaint to the police.
