Cannot stop Casino Operations: CM

Replying to the aggressive questioning from opposition MLAs Vijai Sardesai and Alexio Reginald Lourenco, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that he would ensure that all floating casinos would be out of the River Mandovi before his term ends but it would not be advisable to stop Casino operations or change the Casino policy as it would disturb the invest climate in the state and promoters would approach the courts.

Taking a stand of empathy towards the casino promoters – contrary to a stand ‘no casinos’ in Goa when in opposition, Parrikar further added that huge investments have been made by casino promoters which could be between Rs 50 to Rs 150 crore. If we were the change the policy now, it would have a resultant affect on future investors like the SEZ issue.

Trying to diffuse the criticism on the flip-flop on the casino issue and appearing to be preparing grounds to eye-wash the public of the casino issues, Parrikar said with allowing casino operations to continue the government can raise money which would be utilised for the Home of the Ages, to treat people with Alzheimer’s disease etc. “I don’t need money from casinos to run the government,” he asserted.
