The CBI informed the Supreme Court that there was a fit case for prosecuting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. In an affidavit filed before the court the CBI said it has clinching evidence against Mayawati and dismissed the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal’s decision that the disproportionate assets of Mayawati were gifts received by her.
However, the CBI’s affidavit is perceived as a result of Mayawati’s changing relationship with the UPA government at the Centre.
In April this year, the CBI had expressed willingness to consider Mayawati’s plea to accept the IT department’s certificate. This was at a time when the UPA government needed Mayawati’s support to survive the cut motions moved by the Opposition and the Left Parties.
The recent affidavit has come in the wake of growing differences between Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party and UPA main Congress Party over the farmers’ protest in UP pertaining to the land acquisition for expressway.
In fact, the growing tension between the BSP and the Congress was the reason why the Congress preferred to strike a deal with the BJP over the Nuclear Liability bill rather than dealing with the BSP.
