Scoring brownie points, the opposition in the Corporation of City of Panjim succeeded in postponing the meeting called to discuss the budget for the next financial year, on grounds that sufficient notice, as envisaged in the law, was not given to the members.
Even as Mayor Yatin Parekh called the meeting to order, the opposition corporators led by Vaidehi Naik pointed out that seven days notice, as mentioned in the law, was not given to them and therefore the meeting could not be held.
Although Deputy Mayor Rudresh Chodankar tried to muster support to carry on with the meeting, he failed and the Mayor was forced to postpone the meeting to 5th April.
Ms Naik argued that if not seven days’ at least three days notice should have been given to the members and asserted that the law could not be violated. She pointed out that notice was given only the previous evening thereby not giving the corporators, many of whom are new, any time to study the proposals.
Besides the other 11 BJP supporter corporators independent members Surendra Furtado and his wife Ruth Furtado supported her.
Mayor Yatin Parekh’s defense that the standing committee that included the BJP sponsored corporator Shubham Chodankar had agreed to calling the meeting was not accepted by the members. His argument that the budget had to be approved to release salaries to the staff was dismissed by pointing to the precedent where his predecessor Carolina Po had passed the budget on an earlier occasion, nearly a month later.
