Chinese Prez Xi set to make a historic visit to Nepal after 23 years

Kathmandu, Oct 10 (IECurrentAffairs) Amid all hype in the South Asian media and also to an extent being keenly watched globally – besides the Informal Summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a crucial visit to Nepal on October 12 and 13.

It will be the first visit by a Chinese President to the Himalayan country in 23 years since Jiang Zemin visited in 1996.

Following the talks, President Xi Jinping and his Nepali counterpart Bidya Devi Bhandari “will witness the signing of bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding”, officials said here.

China has been taking keen interest in India’s neighbourhood since 1990s and has also developed good and effective relations with Nepal and other countries such as Bhutan and Myanmar.

Chinese President Xi will be flying to Kathmandu from Mahabalipuram or Mallapuram near Chennai where the Chinese President and Mr Modi will be holding their second Informal Summit on Friday and Saturday.

The first such Informal Summit was hosted by President Xi Jinping at Wuhan in April last year.

Hailing Nepal as an important partner of China in building the Belt and Road, Luo Zhaohui, vice-minister of foreign affairs, said in Beijing on Thursday that China and Nepal have treated each other equally, practiced mutual respect and supported each other over decades.

During his Nepal visit, President Xi will attend a welcoming ceremony and banquet hosted by President Bhandari.

Nepali Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and other leaders will also call on President Xi, Nepal foreign ministry said.

In August, China hosted delegations of media persons from Nepal and India jointly and took them to Beijing, Nanningdon and Shenzhen.
