Chowgules Ordered To Close Mine

Probably for the first time, mine magnate Chowgule & Company was directed by the government to close down its mine at Gavnem in Sattari taluka as it was found to be operating not only in Mhadei wildlife sanctuary but also partly in government land.
The closure order issued by Mines Director Arvind Lolienkar after villagers protested in front of his office, observes that the company did not have the requisite permissions under the Water and Air Pollution (Prevention) Act and also under the Wildlife Protection Act.
The villagers had launched a sustained campaign against the mining operation and alleged that around 1,300 tonnes of ore was already extracted from the area.
The mine was reportedly functioning even though some licenses had expired in December 2009 and some in July 2010.
