Debutants Churchill Brothers Football Club will take on Goa Velha Sports Club in the opening match, as the 2nd edition of the Vedanta Women’s Football league kicks off on Friday at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa.
The match will kick off at 1830 hrs.
Commenting on the league, Goa Football Association President Elvis Gomes said, “GFA understands the future and potential of this league in Goa. The first edition was a huge success and that is why we have I-league side Churchill Brothers fielding team for the tournament this year. Karishma’s exploits last season managed to earn her a place in the Indian team and I’m hoping others will follow in her footsteps this season so that we have a strong Goan representation in the national squad next year.”
Sukhvinder Singh, CEO – Vedanta Football Project, added, “We have witnessed women’s football in Goa go from strength to strength and I’m excited about the new season. We hope women’s football can build a strong fan base at matches. I request all football fans to help grow women’s football further as a sport in Goa and encourage these young women.”
This year the league would see eight teams battle for the coveted women’s league title. A total of 160 plus women footballers would be participating in this year’s league. The eight teams participating in the league this year are Albert Developers Sports Club, Ambelim Sports Club (New), Churchill Brothers Football Club (New), Cuncolim Union, FC Goa (New), Goa Velha Sports Club, Panjim Footballers, and Sporting Clube de Goa.
