Churchill Dismisses Lohia Maidan Meeting as a Gimmick

PWD Minister Churchill Alemao dismissed the meeting called by National Highways Diversion Action Committee on Monday as a political gimmick by people who are only jealous of the good work done by the government.
“We have prepared a white paper only for National Highway 4 showing all the details and therefore anything said before it is just presumption,” he said adding that the details pertaining to widening of NH 4 are available at the Collector’s office and would also be provided to all the affected villages.
“We have consulted all the relevant MLAs and they along with the people are very happy with what we have done with regards to NH4,” he said while pointing out that the number of structures likely to be demolished has been reduced on a mere 136 from the original figure of 659. However, he said that this figure is further likely to come down to 90 including some illegal structures and only 22 concrete structures.

Addressing media persons, he said the white paper on NH 17 should be ready within a month and assured that most of the concerns expressed by people have been addressed. “Babu Azgaonkar is happy with the alternative we have proposed for the 6-km stretch in his constituency, Mauvin Godinho is extremely happy with the elevator provided at Cortalim and Aleixo Sequeira is satisfied with the solution we have offered for Nuvem section,” he said.
Churchill said that the present alignment of NH 17 was done with a hidden motive of getting a new bridge over River Zuari as the present one is expected to last for only another six years. Besides, the two bridges at Talpona and Galgibaga will also be constructed under this project.
He rejected the demand to have the Highways through the hinterland on grounds that the affected people in those areas will object resulting in only confusion because of which the bridges and highway will never come.
Reacting to Radharao Gracias call to resign from the Congress, he asserted that he could never share a platform with Micky Pacheco. However, replying to a question, he said so long as he is satisfied with the Congress, he will remain with the party.
He said the Centre will notify about the land acquisition to incorporate the promise given to Goa government that in densely populated areas, the Highway would be only 35 mts wide very shortly.
