The CID was notified on Friday to take over investigations into the baby sale racket that surfaced at Nirmal Hriday, the Missionaries of Charity-run shelter on Jail Road here, earlier this month.
ADG (Operations) and senior police spokesperson R.K. Mallick told the media that the CID would be probing “broader aspects” of baby trafficking and illegal adoptions at Nirmal Hriday and its sister homes, besides investigations into the FIR already registered at Kotwali thana against a nun and an employee of the shelter.
DGP Pandey ordered the CID probe on July 16, but it was notified on Friday. He also wrote a letter to home secretary S.K.G. Rahate, recommending that the CBI carefully examine foreign aid to the Missionaries of Charity.
