Sources in the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) disclosed that the chief minister has been told to put off Alina Saldanha’s induction that is scheduled for Tuesday.
It may be recalled that CEO S Kumarswamy on Saturday had asked Parrikar to postpone swearing-in of Alina, stating that it will disturb the level playing field in the by-polls.
After the exchange of letters between the Election Commission and the State Government over the last couple of days, the poll panel has finally asked the CM to defer the induction, sources revealed.
Parrikar’s argument that he has right under Article 164 of the Constitution to induct anyone he wants in his Cabinet has been partially accepted by the Commission. But it has been learnt that the Election Commission though it agrees with Parrikar’s argument, has stated that Alina’s induction at this moment would amount to violation of the code of conduct.
Meanwhile, sources in the State Government said they are still waiting for the Chief Minister’s decision on the issue.
