Damu Naik informed that he had demanded for this visit mainly because he was concerned about the development of Fatorda. Focusing on garbage management to be the main issue, he said the leachate that flows from the site joins the rain water flowing through the drains and the stink of this is unbearable. This leads to health problems, pollution and various other things, he added and informed that for solving this problem, they we have always asked different government agencies to intervene, but they only get excuses.
After conducting an inspection, Jacques said that although the flowing of the leachate from Sonsddo garbage dumping area seems to be a perennial problem and it has to be handled in a very systematic manner.
Pointing out that the Chief Officer has appraised him of the problem he assured: “there is a system which will be put in place soon for which we will have a meeting of the agencies concerned and a long term solution will be looked into”.
Jacques informed that the Margao Municipal Council has entered into a concession agreement with Fomento for systematic handling of the waste and assured that a plan of action would be decided which will definitely mitigate which will take some time.
The second major problem is widening of the roads Damu said and added that broadening of the Borda road to 20 mts is a must as there are more than 6000 establishments and residents in this area. He assured that by November 2011, all the roads of Fatorda will be hot-mixed.
He also appealed to the local residents to co-operate and help the authorities in completion of this task.
“I will show what is my vision towards Fatorda with the construction of this 300 mts stretch of the road that will be 20 mts wide. It will have a proper footpath, duct for laying cables and other facilities”’ he said.
