South Goa Collector, G P Naik was forced to withdraw the order issued by him earlier relaxing the timing for transportation of ore following very strong objections from the police and more particularly the traffic cell.
The Collector had issued an order giving more time to mine owners to transport their ore. In fact, as against the earlier time given to them from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm with a lunch break from 12:30 noon to 2:00 pm, the collector had given the mine owners 12 straight hours from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The order was issued despite strong objections voiced by Deputy Superintendent of Police, South Goa Traffic Gajanan Prabhu Dessai who had pointed out that the changed order was in violation of the guidelines set by the Bombay High Court at Goa.
As the Collector issued the order despite the objections, the DySP took up the matter with his senior officers who agreed with his contention that the new order was violating the High Court directions.
The view was also shared by the Director of Mines and Director of Transport and following objections from all these departments, the South Goa Collector had no option but to withdraw the order a day after it was issued.
