Tourism Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar’s promise to clean up Colva beach of the dirt and squalor has remained that – just a promise as nothing has changed at the beach though it is a fortnight now since the promise was made.
It may be recalled that Nilkanth had visited the Colva beach on 14th April along with PWD Minister Churchill Alemao and his daughter Valanka Alemao and had promised to immediately start work of clearing the beach of the dirt and garbage and write to the concerned department with regards to the pollution of the creek.
However, nothing has changed at Colva 15 days later as the garbage continues to remain where it was and Deputy Sarpanch of Colva Anthony alias Mama Fernandes said that no official from either the tourism department or the health department has visited the beach to initiate the cleanliness drive.
Activist Judith Almeida pointed out that waste and sewage water continues to be discharged in the creek and lamented that the minister has given yet another empty promise to the people.
Incidentally, the Goa State Pollution Control Board had inspected the Colva creek last year and found it to be contaminated. However, though a year has passed since the inspection, nothing has been done to stop the creek’s contamination.
