Panjim: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has decided to take a leaf out of the Shiv Sena’s ‘Marathi Manus’ strategy in Maharashtra and give it a Goa-treament of ‘Niz Goenkar’.
The Goa Congress unit has demanded reservation in government jobs for ‘Niz Goenkars’ (Ethnic Goans).
Recently, the BJP government granted 16 per cent quota in government jobs and education under a special category to the Maratha community classifying them as a socially and educationally backward class in Maharashtra.
The Congress has also demanded the scrapping of a clause prescribing minimum 15-year domicile as an eligibility condition for a government job in the state.
Speaking on the demand, Congress spokesperson Agnelo Fernandes, said, “If the BJP government in Maharashtra can provide reservations to the Maratha community, then why can’t the BJP government provide reservations for the ’Niz Goenkars’. It is the duty of the BJP-ruled government in the state to protect the “welfare of each ethnic Goan who is succumbing to demographic changes in the state”, he added.
