Congress corporator Shahzad Pathan among 49 arrested for violence during anti-CAA protests

Ahmedabad, Dec 20 (GCCurrentAffairs) As many as 49 people, including Congress Corporator Shehzad Khan Pathan, have been arrested in connection with violence in Shah-e-Alam area in the city during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC, police said on Friday.

An unnamed case has also been filed against a mob of 5000 people in connection with the yesterday’s violence.

A total of 26 police personnel, including DCP, ACP, PI and PSI rank officials, were injured in the stone pelting by mob in the minority community-dominated area of the old city.

The incident occurred when police tried to stop protestors who did not have permission to carry out a rally against the CAA and NRC.

CCTV footage, showing protestors pelting stones on police officials from close quarters, has gone viral after the incident.

PI of Isanpur police station J M Solanki, who has lodged the case in his police station under various sections of IPC including those pertaining to attempt to murder, rioting and sections of Damage to Public property Act and also Gujarat police act, said that 49 of the 50 accused including the Congress corporator from Danilimada Shazad Pathan have been arrested.

He said that raids were being conducted to nab others involved in the incident. The CCTV footage would be sent to FSL for identification of other culprits.

Notably, police has to resort to teargas shelling and baton charge to disperse the mob.

In a separate incident, police in Chhapi of Banaskantha district has also lodged a similar case against 22 named accused and a crowd of around 3000 people for attack on police on a local highway by protestors yesterday.

Video of this incident has also gone viral. Local Congress supported independent MLA Jignesh Mewani, who had supported the bandh call protest, had also tweeted about the incident.

Tight security arrangement was in place in the affected areas where the situation was now under control.

Additional 2 SRP companies apart from the existing ones were being deployed in the area.
