Congress demands withdrawal of new accreditation guidelines for media to cover Assembly proceedings

All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Girish Chodankar on Wednesday criticised Goa Legislature Secretariat and Assembly Speaker for issuing a fresh set of guidelines for accreditation of media organisations and their representatives for covering Assembly proceedings.

Addressing a press conference at the party state headquarter in the city, he said, “Congress party fully condemns the guidelines and demands that they are withdrawn. India is a democratic country which has a constitution. The guidelines are unconstitutional, undemocratic and aimed at suppressing voice. We are with media institutions and ready to launch agitation if required.”

Stating that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had a mindset of misusing power, he claimed that it was the BJP which had ‘misused’ media to the maximum extent, be it in Goa or at the Centre, to come to power.

“The guidelines show ‘capitalistic and casteist’ mindset. There have been many governments in Goa but non of them have given such type of guidelines. It is against Constitution,” he said.

A fresh set of guidelines has been issued by the Goa legislative Assembly which has made circulation of newspapers and revenue earnings of news portals criteria for accreditation for journalists to cover the proceedings of the state assembly.
