Congress seeks ban on Patanjali product ‘fostering’ gender discriminaton

Nagpur, July 20 (UNI) A demand was voiced in the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Friday to ban the sale of a Patanjali product which purportedly promotes birth of a male child in blatant violation of the law.

Food & Drugs Administration Minister Girish Bapat ordered an immediate inquiry into the allegation and assured of appropriate action against those found guilty.

Raising the issue through a point of propriety, Congress MLC Sanjay Dutt demanded action against Patanjali and Baba Ramdev for selling as medicine– ‘Putrajeevak Beej’ — eating of which they claim promotes birth of male child.
Dutt told the House that it was a blatant violation of ‘Prohibition of Sex Selection Act’ and ‘Regulation of Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.’

On one hand, Dutt alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi claims that his government is promoting ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, and on the other, Ramdev’s Patanjali was openly selling ‘Putrajeevak Beej’, which targets ‘Beti’ and encourages gender discrimination.

“Why is the state government silent, why is it not taking action?” Dutt asked.

The Congress MLC demanded that the Food & Civil Supplies and Medical Administration Ministry seize all the stocks of the product, ban it and file police cases against Patanjali and all stockists who are selling it.

Accepting the demand of Dutt, Chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar directed the minister to make a statement on it.
Bapat stated that an immediate inquiry will be ordered and appropriate action as per the law of the land will be taken against those found guilty.

“No matter how big (a person is), law is the same for everyone,” he added.
