Congress to extend support to JDS to form Karnataka Government

Even as the BJP took an unbeatable lead over it in counting trends for the Karnataka assembly elections, the Congress on Tuesday said that it was ready to support the JD(S) to form a coalition Government in the state.

Trends of counting for the Karnataka assembly elections showed the BJP surge ahead in 107 seats while the Congress was leading in 77 seats and the JD(S) in 40 seats.

Addressing a press conference, AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad said the party was ready to support a Government led by the JD(S).

“We accept the mandate of the people. We bow our heads to the verdict. We don’t have numbers to form the government. The Congress has offered to support JD(S) to form the government,” Congress leader G Parameshwara said.

“We had a telephonic conversation with H D Deve Gowda ji and his son H D Kumaraswamy. They have accepted our offer. Hopefully, we will be together,” Azad said.

Azad said the Congress and the JD(S) together have the required numbers to form a government in the state.

“Together, we and the JD(S) have the required numbers to form the government in the state,” Azad said.

Talking to reporters, AICC general secretary incharge for Karnataka K C Venugopal said, ”we (Congress and JD-S) are jointly meeting the Governor in the evening today.”
