The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee is willing to enter into a tacit understanding with its former MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monseratte under his new political party United Goans Party (UGP) for the upcoming Goa Assembly Polls but is not keen to enter into a similar understanding with its former General Secretary and now leader of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai.
Sources in GPCC told GoaChronicle.com that in their overall analysis and strategy, Monseratte in Tiswadi will be an advantage to Congress and a huge disadvantage to BJP. In fact with Monseratte, determined to contest in Panjim (BJP National Leader Manohar Parrikar’s bastion), the party leaders both at the state and Centre feels that Congress will be able upset the BJP hold in Tiswadi. On the other hand while Sardesai has proved his mettle in his home constituency Fatorda, he is still not considered to be a force outside of Fatorda enough to upset BJP plans. However, while Congress Goa Desk-in-Charge Digvijay Singh is pushing for an alliance with Sardesai, the local leaders in GPCC are not keen in forging any alliance.
Monseratte contested the Goa Assembly Elections 2012 on Congress banner in St Cruz and his wife Jennifer Monseratte contested on the Congress banner in Taleigao. Monseratte later left the Congress party and has now formed a new political party UGP.
Sardesai on being denied the Congress ticket contested as an Independent and won the Fatorda seat. He has now formed a new political party Goa Forward and is keen in contesting 10 seats in the Goa Assembly Elections 2017.
