Crime Branch officials on Friday arrested Gitesh Naik, the contractor engaged in the illegal mining at Pernem in which Nationalist Congress Party’s national General Secretary Jitendra Deshprabhu stands indicted.
Gitesh has been arrested for illegally transporting the ore from Deshprabhu’s property to Khorgao village.
The arrest was made following directions by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Pernem based on a complaint lodged by Pradeep Kakodkar, Kashinath Shetye and Ketan Govekar alleging cheating the state exchequer to the tune of Rs. 50 crore.
The Directorate of Mines has levied a fine of Rs. 1.72 crore on Deshprabhu for illegal mining and Deshprabhu’s defense has been that though the land where the mining was done belongs to him, he was not involved in the activity.
