Bowing to the opposition, the government has apparently shelved its plans to construct a mini-convention centre at the site currently used as a parking slot for INOX multiplex at Campal Panjim.
Announcing this, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said the mini-convention centre was planned as added infrastructure for the International Film Festival of India permanently being hosted in Goa in order to host the opening and closing ceremony.
While disclosing that the government is now considering an alternate site for the mini-convention centre, he however said that a full fledged convention centre with a capacity of 5,000 seats is also on the anvil.
The mini-convention centre of 2,000 seats was planned to include two screening halls, an auditorium, a media centre, a press conference hall and an exhibition hall.
However, residents of Panjim and more particularly from Campal had objected to the project on grounds that it would lead to congestion in the area. The new Panjim Mayor Yatin Parekh also agreed with the opponents.
