Washington: A police officer, who had sustained grievous injuries during the US Capitol riots, has passed away, Capitol Police confirmed on Friday.
“At approximately 9:30 p.m. this evening (January 7, 2021), United States Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty”, the Capitol Police said in a statement.
It further said that officer Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the US Capitol and was injured while physically engaging with protesters.
He returned to his division office and collapsed. Sicknick was then taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Capitol police assured of probing the unfortunate death of the policeman by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, the USCP, and federal partners.
“The entire USCP Department expressed its deepest sympathies to Officer Sicknick’s family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague. We ask that Officer Sicknick’s family, and other USCP officers’ and their families’ privacy be respected during this time”, the statement read.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump’s supporters swarmed in the Capitol Hill building in the middle of a Congress session to stop what they alleged to be a “stolen election”. Several leader have expressed sadness over the events in Washington.
