Superintendent of Police (South) Tony Fernandes and Deputy Superintendent of Police Rohidas Patre on Tuesday acted as couriers for a mining firm to deliver a cheque to the family of a youth.
Tuesday morning, 25-year old Francisco Jivaji was crushed to death by a mining truck at Rivona following which angry locals blocked all traffic on the road.
However, the senior police officers took on themselves the charge of delivering a cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs offered as compensation by the mining firm where the truck was used.
The senior police officers first contacted Sulemon Bosco, a relative of the deceased youth, who however refused to accept the cheque that was offered as compensation.
They then contacted one of the Don Bosco priests, and accompanied by him met the parents of the deceased youth and prevailed upon them to accept the compensation.
Quepem police has meanwhile booked Mohan Bablo Naik who was driving the truck, for rash and negligent driving.
