Georgian cinema, under the Country Focus Section by Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) was launched at IFFI 2010 Goa on Wednesday, in the presence of co-scriptwriter of film Monanieba (Repentance) Nana Janelidze and Entertainment Society of Goa Chief Executive Officer Manoj Srivastava. This section will showcase four films from Georgia directed by directors from erstwhile USSR.
The inaugural film Monanieba (Repentance) has received the special jury prize at the Cannes film festival in the 1980s. Other films to be screened under Georgia Film Focus include Temur Babluani’s Udzinarta mze (The Sun of the Sleepless), Sergei Parajanov’s Ambavi Suramis tsikhitsa (The Legend of Suram Fortress), Georgy Shengelaya’s Pirosmani and Levan Tutberidze’s Gaseirneba Karabaghshi (A Trip to Karabakh).
Film Pirosmani deals on the life of Georgian painter Niko Pirosmanashvili and Gaseirneba Karabaghshi (A Trip to Karabakh) tackles the subject of civil war and the futility of conflict.
