Defer Alina’s Induction, CEO To CS

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S Kumaraswamy has asked Chief Secretary (CS) Sanjay Srivastava to defer Alina Sadanha’s induction in the cabinet before the Cortalim by-poll.

In his letter to Srivastava, Kumaraswamy stated: “In my opinion, the alleged proposal, if any, tends to project a contesting candidate which would disturb the level playing field”.

The induction episode has created differences between Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who had decided to induct Alina into his cabinet while the Election Commission is of the opinion that as it will affect level-playing field for the Cortalim bypoll.

RTI activist Adv Aires Rodrigues had complained to the Election Commission of India (ECI) that induction of Alina amounts to violation of the code of conduct, while Parrikar had stated that the Constitution of India empowers him to induct anyone in his cabinet, provided the inducted person is elected to the house within six months.
