Delhi Court takes cognizance of defamation complaint by Republic TV against Navika Kumar

A Delhi Court today took cognizance of the defamation complaint filed by ARG Outlier Media Pvt Ltd against Times Now’s Navika Kumar for making allegedly defamatory statements against Republic TV in connection with the WhatsApp chats related to TRP scam (ARG Outlier Media Pvt. Ltd v. Navika Kumar).

ARG Outlier Media is the parent company of news channel Republic TV.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Patiala House Court Chander Jit Singh today fixed the matter for pre-summoning evidence on June 8.

Advocate Vijay Aggarwal appeared for ARG Outlier Media.

The defamation complaint was filed following a broadcast by Kumar on January 18, 2021. As per the complaint, Kumar made distorted and misconstrued statements regarding Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami’s WhatsApp chats in connection with the TRP scam.

The complaint stated that in an attempt to colour the minds of the public, Kumar accused the complainant of “building its success” on “TRP manipulation”.

Kumar spewed reckless and grossly defamatory material and telecast the same on TV and published them on the internet, the complaint has alleged.

It is also pointed out that Kumar made “rabid and unfounded claims”, accusing Goswami of “endangering national security” and “leaking state secrets”.

It is alleged the defamatory content aired by Kumar was a consequence of “professional jealousy”.
