The Goa Football Association elections slated for October 24 took an interesting turn with President of Dempo Sports Club Shrinivas Dempo throwing his hat in the ring. Flanked by current GFA President Joaquim Alemao and Ex-All India Football Federation Treasurer Shivanand Salgaonkar, Shrinivas announced his candidature for the post of President of the Association.
Joaquim Alemao disclosed that he along with other football lovers had prevailed upon Shrinivas to enter the fray. “Both, Shivanand and I have been the presidents of GFA and now it is the turn of Shrinivas,” he said. Incidentally all three of them are associated with Goa’s leading football clubs – Salgaoncars Sports Club, Churchill Brothers and Dempo Sports Club.
Shivanand argued that Shrinivas, with his experience as a businessman, was the right choice to lead GFA in coming years which are going to be challenging not only because of the new constitution, but also because of the changing sports scenario in the country.
Shrinivas while admitting that he had earlier declined to get into the GFA committee, football lovers, his club fans and Churchill Alemao, Joaquim Alemao and Shivanand Salgaonkar forced him to do a rethink. He said he was committed now and there was no looking back.
Meanwhile Savio Messias who has been serving GFA as a General Secretary for many years on Thursday was the fist person to file his nomination for the post of President of the Association. He said that he had asked Shrinivas whether he was interested in contesting the elections and having received a negative response, had gone ahead with his plans.
Savio was confident that he enjoyed support and backing from the 157 eligible to participate in the election process as they have seen his work for the last many years.
A third candidate Peter Vaz President of Sporting Cube de Goa is also expected to file his nominations for the post of President. GFA elections are scheduled to be held on 24th October.
