Stopping short of apologizing, Director General of Police Aditya Arya admitted that he had faulted with his “shoot order” statement with regard to the 25th May Balli incident.
The confession was made to a delegation of journalists led by Goa Union of Journalists President Pandurang Gaonkar that met Arya on Wednesday morning to protest against his and his department’s attitude.
Journalists were protesting against the press note issued by the Goa Police accusing media of “deliberately” distorting the DGP’s statement in a bid to malign him and the force.
They also objected to the Goa Police’s contention that media was not sensitive to the need of “maintaining peace and law and order” as was mentioned in the statement.
Arya had no option but to admit to his mistake as the journalists presented him with CD that had recorded his statement on 18th June at a workshop held at International Centre, Goa.
Stopping short of apologizing, he however assured that such mistakes will not recur and also urged the media and police to start afresh. He also conceded that there was a big gap in the relationship between the people and the police that needed to be bridged.
