Chennai, Aug 7 (UNI) DMK President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi passed away at a private hospital on Tuesday evening.
A bulletin issued by Kauvery Hospitals, where he was admitted for the last 11 days said, ‘Mr Karunanidhi failed to respond to the treatment despite the best possible efforts rendered by doctors and nurses.
As the hospital announced his demise, thousands of DMK cadres, who had thronged the hospital, especially women, broke into tears and wept inconsolably.
Ninety-four-year-old Karunanidhi, who underwent a procedure to change his tracheostomy, suffered fever and urinary tract infection and was treated at his Gopalapuram residence.
He was shifted to the hospital past midnight on July 28 after dip in blood pressure, before his condition suffered a transient set back the next day and was advised an extended hospital stay for
treatment of age-related problems.
However, due to medical management his condition was normalised, before his condition worsened on Monday afternoon, which was announced by TNCC President Su Thirunavvukarasar and later confirmed by the hospital in a bulletin.
It said he was on continuous monitoring and being treated with active medical support.
“There has been decline in the medical condition of Karunanidhi’, it said.
“Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age-related ailments”, the bulletin said, adding, his response to the medical interventions over the next 24 hours would determine the prognosis
