Drishti Beach Management Services on Thursday terminated the services of 54 trainee lifeguards while serving notices on 308 others. Revealing this, Chief Operating Office V Kanwar said the behavior of the persons issued notices or sacked does not make them worthy of being appointed as lifeguards, whose objective is to save human lives.
Although Drishti’s services along the Baga to Sinquerim beach stretch have been severely affected, patrolling by rescue jet ski operators is keeping the situation under control as on Thursday itself, one domestic tourist was given first aid at Calangute by Drishti staff while three persons were rescued from drowning at Vagator, Palolem and Ashwem.
Drishti had employed 152 lifeguards in October 2008 while another 268 were taken on board in November 2009 and just last month another 78 trainee lifeguards were recruited.
The lifeguards have been on strike since Monday demanding a hike in their wages, action against senior lifeguards for assaulting junior ones and also a reduction in work hours.
