Goa’s new Director General of Police Aditya Arya who had earlier worked in Goa 26 years ago as a Deputy Superintendent of Police said that drugs is an old menace in Goa revealing that it was prevalent even during his earlier posting in the State.
Addressing media persons for the first time after taking over as the new Director General of Police, Arya recalled that children from well to do families had become addicted to drugs at that time. He related the tale of his friend’s son who was addicted to drugs and lived with him for nearly 20 days after fleeing from the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour where he was being treated for his addiction.
Recalling his association with a NGO working with drug addicts then, he said he would not mind getting involved in such issues once again.
He pointed out that 26 years back Goa had not become a transit point for drugs nor were they being processed in the State, yet its use was prevalent.
While remaining non-committal on the police-drug dealer nexus in Goa, he said he would want the entire State of Goa to support the police in their anti-drug movement.
