The authorities have finally admitted that it was Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Gaonkar who not only knocked down a motorist but also fled from the scene leaving the unconscious victim lying on the roadside.
The revelation was made by none other than the Home Minister Ravi Naik in the Assembly while replying to a question tabled by Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar.
It may be recalled that on 25th November 2010, a complaint was lodged with the Panjim Town Police Station by one Sainath Arsekar stating that a white coloured Maruti Swift car knocked him down near the Goa Science Centre and sped from the scene the previous day.
Ravi Naik admitted that investigations have revealed that not only did the car belong to Mahesh Gaonkar but that he was at the wheel at the time of the accident.
The police registered a case of hit and run and rash and negligent driving following the complaint but took no action against the erring police officer. On the contrary they tried to hush up the matter and ever sought to pressurize Sainath and his friends by registering a case against them based on a complaint registered by Mahesh Gaonkar claiming that they had chased him on a bike and abused him.
