A UK national was fined 5 lakh and two of her properties in Goa were confiscated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for having failed to comply with the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
As per records sourced under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Carol Elizabeth Ashby was fined for purchasing two properties measuring over 3,000 sq m at Assagao in violation of the FEMA. Ashby, a retired teacher, is currently an animal rescue volunteer.
The ED in their reply to a RTI query by activist Rajan Ghate said one property admeasuring 1,525 sq m and another one of 1,775 sq m were ordered to be confiscated. These were purchased in the years 2002 and 2005 respectively.
The order signed by the ED’s deputy director Samir Bajaj stated that the UK national had entered into a capital account transaction to the tune of 12,30,000 in contravention of Section 6 (3) (i) of the FEMA, 1999
