Panaji: Goa Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Phillip Neri Rodrigues told the State Assembly on Wednesday that Karnataka had diverted the water of River Mhadei but the exact amount of water diversion could not be quantified.
Speaking during Question Hour, he said a special leave petition was filed in the Supreme Court against the order of the inter state water dispute tribunal. He said the water diversion could not be quantified as it happened in Karnataka.
He said the state government had submitted in the Supreme Court a report on the diversion of water by the neighbouring state.
“We have submitted the report to the court. All the three states have submitted their reports. We cannot table the report as the case is before the SC,” Rodrigues said.
He was responding to the oppositions fear that the ecology of the state would be affected by the diversion of water.
Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte raising the issue asked the government to give status of the dispute with Karnataka.
He also sought to know whether salinity test of Mhadei river water in Goa was done.
Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai said a committee should have been appointed to check the daily loss of the water diversion.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said Jal Shakti Ministry had approved National Institute of Hydrology to be the agency for conducting the test.
