Panjim: Family members of seafarers who are unable to return home due to lock down imposed due to COVID-19 held hunger strike near official residence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in the city on Wednesday.
The protesters held placards which read ‘Our Govt is dead, can’t bring our seafarers back’.
However, they were later arrested by the police.
Those who were arrested included five women from families of the seafarers who are stranded on board ships.
Before staging protest, the family members of seafarers met Chief Minister but claimed that they were not convinced by the assurances given by the Chief Minister.
According to government’s estimate there are around 7,000-8,000 seafarers stranded on board various ships.
Opposition condemned the action of the police.
