Family members of Cipriano Fernandes, the 39-year old resident of Moira who is reportedly died while in police custody, have refused to take possession of the body until a judicial enquiry is ordered into the sordid saga.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, the family members asserted that Cipriano died on 8th January while he was in police custody and demanded that justice be done to identify and punish the one responsible for his death.
The family members have also demanded action against the police personnel responsible for the death of the young person and specifically named Sandesh Chodankar.
It may be recalled that Cipriano who was working on a cruise liner was picked up by the police after his girlfriend complained to the police against Cipriano following a disagreement between the two.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the police who came to pick up Cipriano on 7th January, assaulted him quite badly as they were pushing him in the jeep and it is alleged that he was further beaten in the police lock.
Rubbishing police claim that Cipriano died due to convulsions, the family members pointed out that he never in the past had such an attack nor was he suffering from any illness in recent times.
They have also demanded a second post mortem to be conducted by a medical board.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has asked Director General of Police Bhimsen Bassi to submit a report in this case.
