It was a fearsome for two families in Goa – one from Salcete and the other from Tiswadi – as two family members of each of the families died in tragic circumstances.
For the Rodrigues family from Fatorda, it was a pilgrimage that turned into a tragedy as the vehicle in which they were returning to Goa from Vailankanni met with an accident killing the grandmother and granddaughter and injuring four others.
The accident occurred 16 kms away from Khanapur at around 2:30 pm when the Wagon R in which the Rodrigues family was travelling collided with a truck proceeding to Mangalore.
63-year-old Rosita Louis Rodrigues and 9-year-old Canossa Conception Rodrigues died on the spot while four others – Maria Conception Rodrigues, Conception Louis Rodrigues, Chrishola Conception Rodrigues and Kimberly John Pereira – were injured.
All four injured were admitted to KLES Hospital, Belgaum where the condition of three is stated to be serious while Conception Rodrigues is said to be stable.
In another gruesome incident at the island village of Chorao, a woman set herself and her infant son ablaze for reasons still to be ascertained.
35-year-old Raghvi Raghunath Wadekar apparently doused herself and her three-and-a-half year old son Manjunath Wadekar with kerosene before setting both ablaze.
The other inmates of the house were busy with a aarti of Lord Ganesh in the living room when Raghvi committed this heinous act at the back of the house.
Although police and neighbours tried to douse the fires, they could not succeed and the charred bodies have been sent to Goa Medical College for post mortem.
