New Delhi, Apr 27 (GCCurrentAffairs) Feeling betrayed over being denied ticket from Gurdarpur, where her husband and late film actor Vinod Khanna was Lok Sabha MP, his wife Kavita Khanna on Saturday, however, said the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have her support.
Addressing mediapersons, Ms Khanna said,”I understand that the party has a right to decide the candidate for a constituency, but there is a way to do it. I had received so many calls from the party office saying my name is final.”
Expressing a sense of betrayal, she said,”after Vinod Khannaji’s death, I was told that I should make up my mind for an electoral debut and that I would be contesting the election. I felt abandoned, rejected. I was made to feel absolutely insignificant. Nobody from the party called me to say there is another candidate. I was in Delhi when Sunny Deol joined. I would have gone had they called. I have been approached by many other parties.”
She asserted that she along with Vinod Khanna had worked for the people of the Gurdaspur constituency for 20 years.
BJP recently fielded Bollywood actor Sunny Deol from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat, a seat Vinod Khanna represented in Parliament.
On whether she is still believes that the BJP has ‘betrayed’ her, Ms Khanna said,”I am not saying that party has betrayed me. I felt betrayed. There is difference between how one perceive things. They did what they felt was in the best interest of Gurdaspur. They did it in the interest of the party.”
Asked if she would contest as an Independent from the Gurdaspur seat, Ms Khanna said,”Mai mauke ka fayda uthane walo me se nahi hu (I am not among those who take advantage of the opportunities). I wanted this time to retrospect. I was under so much pressure. And I tell you that I am confident that had I stood as an independent, I would have won. But this is not about me, this is about the country and I want the BJP candidate to win from Gurdaspur,” she said.
”I will not fight elections. I am with Mr Modi, and I extend my full support to him. Main chahti hun Gurdaspur ki seat Modiji ki Jholi me jaye (I want BJP to win Gurdaspur seat). But I have to insist that this cannot happen again because I am making a personal sacrifice,” she said.
On whether she will campaign for Sunny in Gurdaspur, Ms Khanna said,” Sunny has not asked me to campaign for him.No one has asked me to campaign.”
Currently, the Gurdaspur constituency is represented by Congress MP Sunil Jakhar, who won the seat in the 2017 bypoll, which was necessitated after the death of Vinod Khanna in April that year.
Mr Jakhar had defeated BJP candidate Swaran Salaria by a whopping margin of 1,93,219 votes.
