The first direct flight from Goa taking pilgrims to the Haj is scheduled to take off at around 1 pm on Friday from the Dabolim airport.
The flight has been delayed by 11 days due to the damage to the runway at Dabolim after a tanker carrying aviation fuel overturned.
Haj pilgrims were felicitated at a function held at Vasco on Thursday where Chief Minister Digambar Kamat while thanking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel for enabling this direct flight also appreciated the initiate taken by MP Francisco Sardinha.
He hoped the number of pilgrims will increase in future and wished the pilgrims a memorable journey.
A jumbo jet Boeing B747-400 of Alwafeer Airline has been chartered to take the Haj pilgrims directly from Goa to Madina. Besides Goans, muslims from others states like Kerala, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are travelling on this maiden flight.
