Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) has cautioned MLA Agnelo Fernandes from interfering with their livelihood and set a week’s deadline for the authorities to hand over the jetty at Sinquerim for the exclusive use of the traditional fishermen.
The jetty constructed by the Fisheries Department in the 80s for the traditional fishermen has been in an eye of storm as it has been captured by water sports operators who berth their vessels there.
Traditional fishermen have been protesting against this as it deprives them of space to berth their vessels particularly at the time of unloading their catch.
Following a representation, on 15th December Fisheries Department officials visited the site to erect a signboard notifying that the jetty was for the use of traditional fishermen when trouble broke out.
Water sports operators prevented the officials from erecting the board and even assaulted traditional fishermen present there.
Local fishermen had complained to the police that they were assaulted by MLA Agnelo Fernandes’ brother Pascoal at his behest while a counter complaint against them has also been registered.
GRE while condemning Agnelo Fernandes for working against their interest has now threatened to launch a state wide agitation if the jetty is not handed over to the traditional fishermen within a week.
