The ban on fishing by trawlers and purseiners comes into effect today and will be effective till 31st July in a bid to give mother nature to recuperate so that the roe laden fish that come closer to the shore to lay their eggs, follow the nature’s cycle.
Besides prohibiting fishing by trawlers and purseiners, the Directorate of Fisheries has also issued a warning to fishermen not to venture out into the sea due to rough weather due to the monsoon season.
The two respective collectors have been asked to seal all the fishing jetties within their jurisdiction and also the petrol pumps there.
In order to implement the ban, the department has also requisitioned the services of Marine police besides patrolling by the department’s vessels.
In Goa there are around 1,157 registered trawlers and purseiners.
